Rainwater harvesting is an important component of water conservation efforts of an organization. This not only increases the ground water table but also helps in reducing soil erosion. However it should be implemented scientifically. We need to actually measure the rate at which recharge is happening at the particular site. In porous soils recharge will be faster, but in black cotton soil, it will be very slow. It will be a good strategy to store harvested rainwater. Recently visited the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Oberoi Springs, Andheri West along with Milind Kulkarni for a detailed inspection.
This visit provided a practical understanding of how residential complexes are effectively managing wastewater treatment and reuse.
During the inspection, we observed key treatment units and processes:

✔️ Equalization Tank (EQ Tank) – for flow balancing and load stabilization

✔️ Aeration Tank – facilitating biological treatment using aerators

✔️ Sedimentation Tank – for sludge settling and clarification

✔️ Flocculation System – improving solid-liquid separation

✔️ Pumping & Metering Systems – for flow control and monitoring

✔️ Process Flow Diagram (PFD) – giving a clear overview of treatment stages

It was insightful to see how engineering design translates into real-world operation—ensuring efficient sewage treatment, environmental compliance, and water reuse.
Such site visits strengthen practical knowledge and bridge the gap between theory and implementation in environmental engineering.

Here Prasad Kulkarni is holding a bottle of Crystal clear water generated from the Sewage Treatment Plant of a housing society in Mumbai. This water is now used for flushing and gardening. The society got releif from the black coloured foul odoured water from old STP. The STP was desigened by Prachi Services Inc .
