General Information

Domestic waste water or sewage if disposed without treatment, results in pollution of water bodies, ground water etc. As per Water Act, sewage has to be treated to conform to effluent standards as stipulated by IS 2499. Traditionally sewage treatment was the responsibility of local self governments such as Municipal Corporations, Municipal bodies etc. But now a days it is made mandatory for big residential complexes to provide sewage treatment plants. Many residential complexes are providing STP voluntarily to reuse and recycle water for purposes such as flushing, car washing etc. The ever increasing rates of water makes it sensible to provide STP. Apartment from residential complexes, STPs are also required by Resorts, Hotels and for the areas which are not covered by sewerage system. Traditionally methods such as Activated Sludge Process (ASP), Trickling Filter, Stabilization ponds are used for sewage treatment. But off late various modifications of ASP such as MBBR (Moving Bed Bio Reactor), MBR (Membrane Bio Reactor), Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) are popularly used. The first two methods are particularly used in residential complexes in urban areas where land is scarce.

Important units in sewage treatment plant are as follows:

Screens,

Grit Chamber

Primary Sedimentation Tank

Aeration Tank

Secondary Sedimentation Tank

Pressure Sand Filter

Disinfection

To remove hardness, lime soda process, ion exchange process or reverse osmosis (RO) process can be used. RO process can be also used for desalination and removal of bacteria.
